Water Boreholes & Ground Source Heat Pumps in London

Over 80 projects completed across London. Free site assessments and no-obligation estimates.

London is a significant and growing market for Nicholls with over 80 completed projects across the capital. Our work in London is predominantly ground source heat pump installations — the dense urban environment and premium property market make GSHP an attractive renewable heating option. We also deliver water boreholes, soakaways and increasingly data centre cooling solutions along the western corridor.

Local geology in London

🧭

London's geology is dominated by London Clay — challenging for water boreholes but excellent for closed-loop GSHP installations due to its consistent thermal properties. Chalk is accessible at depth (typically 50-100m) in some areas. The Thames gravels provide localised aquifer potential. Our strongest areas — Wimbledon, Putney and Kensington — sit on London Clay, with most projects being GSHP installations for high-value residential properties.

Every site is different. A desk-based geological assessment is always the starting point for any project.

Common questions about London

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often from London residential, commercial and agricultural clients.

Can you drill boreholes in London despite the dense urban environment?
Yes — and we do it routinely. Our compact drilling rigs fit through 5ft access gaps, which covers the vast majority of London town houses, mews properties and commercial premises with even a small rear garden or courtyard. Our 80+ London projects include Kensington town houses, Wimbledon family homes, Bromley commercial sites and large residential developments in zones 1-5. The constraint is almost always access rather than geology.
What's the geology under London — will boreholes work here?
London geology is dominated by London Clay (typically 30-100m thick) overlying the productive Thames Valley chalk aquifer at depth. Water boreholes need to penetrate the clay to reach the chalk — usually 100-180m total — but yields are reliable once at depth. The chalk aquifer is heavily used by London's water companies but private abstraction is still viable in many areas with EA licensing. Closed-loop GSHP works very well — London Clay has excellent thermal characteristics for ground loops.
How much does borehole drilling in London cost?
London borehole costs run higher than greenfield rural sites due to access, depth and site-protection requirements: £18,000-£35,000 for residential, £40,000-£100,000+ for commercial. Compact rigs and careful site management add cost but mean even constrained sites are workable. Fixed written estimate after a free site assessment — particularly important in London where access is everything.
Do I need an EA licence for a London borehole?
Above 20m³/day, yes. London is part of the EA's serious water stress designation and abstraction-licence scrutiny is amongst the most rigorous in England — the chalk aquifer is over-allocated in many sub-catchments. Our Licensing & Consulting team handles the application including the hydrogeological reports the EA requires. Below 20m³/day (covers most residential and many smaller commercial sites) no licence is required.
Will a ground source heat pump work in London?
Excellently. London Clay is one of the best closed-loop GSHP geologies in the UK — high thermal conductivity, stable temperature, predictable performance. The chalk aquifer also supports open-loop GSHP at depth for properties with the right scale. We're MCS-certified and have completed many London GSHP installations — from terraced houses in Wimbledon and Richmond to commercial sites in the Bromley and Croydon corridors.
Why Nicholls for boreholes and GSHP in London?
80+ London projects, compact rigs designed for urban sites, in-house drilling and design (no subcontracting) and our Licensing & Consulting team can handle the EA application end-to-end. We've worked across all London zones; site access drives our scheduling more than distance. Particularly active in Kensington, Chelsea, Wimbledon, Richmond, Bromley and the river corridors where commercial cooling demand is growing.
