Water Boreholes & Ground Source Heat Pumps in East Sussex

Over 87 projects completed across East Sussex. Free site assessments and no-obligation estimates.

East Sussex is a key operational area for Nicholls with 87 completed projects. The county's varied geology — from the chalk of the South Downs through Wealden Clay to the Hastings Beds — means every project requires careful site assessment. We have strong experience around Lewes, Uckfield, Crowborough, Wadhurst and the Rye area.

Local geology in East Sussex

🧭

East Sussex geology is dominated by the chalk South Downs in the south and the Wealden Clay and Hastings Beds in the High Weald. The Lewes and Ringmer area (our most active zone) sits at the chalk/clay boundary where conditions can change over short distances. The High Weald around Uckfield, Crowborough and Wadhurst requires deeper drilling through clay into underlying sandstone. Water quality is variable — iron and manganese treatment is frequently required in clay areas.

Every site is different. A desk-based geological assessment is always the starting point for any project.

Common questions about East Sussex

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often from East Sussex residential, commercial and agricultural clients.

How deep does a borehole need to be in East Sussex?
East Sussex geology splits broadly between the chalk of the South Downs in the south and the Hastings Beds / Wealden Clay of the High Weald in the north. Chalk-area boreholes (Lewes, Ringmer, the Downs villages) reach productive water at 30-80m. High Weald boreholes (Uckfield, Crowborough, Wadhurst) typically need 80-130m through clay to the underlying sandstone aquifer. We do a desk-based geological assessment using BGS data and our 87+ East Sussex project records before any drill date is set.
How much does borehole drilling in East Sussex cost?
Residential water boreholes in East Sussex typically cost £10,000-£20,000 depending on depth and treatment requirements. High Weald clay-area boreholes (Uckfield, Crowborough, Wadhurst) often need iron and manganese treatment which adds to the install cost. Chalk-area boreholes (Lewes, Ringmer) generally need lighter treatment. Commercial sites £20,000-£60,000+. Fixed written estimate after a free site assessment.
Will a ground source heat pump work in the East Sussex Weald?
Yes — particularly well. The Wealden Clay of the High Weald is excellent territory for closed-loop GSHP: stable ground temperature, predictable thermal conductivity, and the rural / semi-rural property mix means most sites have space for borehole arrays. We've completed many GSHP installations across Crowborough, Uckfield, Wadhurst and the Hurst Green area. MCS certified; BUS grant handled as part of the installation.
What about private water supply in East Sussex?
Strong territory. The South Downs chalk in the south of the county and the deeper Hastings Beds sandstone in the High Weald both support reliable private water supplies. We've installed water boreholes from country estates south of Lewes to working farms in the Crowborough area. Properties using more than 20m³/day need an EA abstraction licence, which our in-house Licensing & Consulting team handles.
Why is East Sussex prone to water supply issues?
East Sussex is supplied largely by South East Water, whose network was under a 202-day Temporary Use Ban from July 2025 to February 2026 (the longest in regional memory) plus repeated 2022-2024 hosepipe restrictions. The county is in the EA's official 'serious water stress' designation. We've put together a guide to water security for Kent and East Sussex commercial sites — see /water-security-kent-sussex for the detail.
Why Nicholls for boreholes and GSHP in East Sussex?
We've completed 87+ projects across the county, with concentrations around Lewes, Uckfield, Crowborough, Wadhurst and the Rye / Hastings corridor. We design, drill, license, install and service in-house — no subcontracting the technical work. The East Sussex geology is genuinely varied (chalk / clay / Hastings Beds) and our local project records mean we can usually predict drill depth and water quality before mobilising the rig.
