Overview
Nicholls were engaged to design and install a closed-loop ground source heat pump system for a Knightsbridge home undergoing complete refurbishment, providing renewable, low-carbon heating with minimal visual impact.
About the project
The client now has a renewable heating system for their home in the heart of central London, with significantly lower running costs than fossil-fuel heating. The whole installation sits below ground and out of sight, so the property's appearance is unchanged. The heating and hot water equipment has been brought together in one tidy basement plantroom, which makes the system simple to live with. It also suits a home refurbished to new-build standards of insulation and air tightness.
To reach the ground beneath a Zone 1 London property, Nicholls lowered the drilling equipment by crane through a lightwell and set it up in the basement. Two closed-loop boreholes were drilled, each to 162 m into the Chalk. Inside the compact plantroom, Nicholls fitted the heat pump, a direct hot water cylinder and a buffer vessel, arranged so that the full system sits neatly in the available space.
The result is a low-carbon system with a small footprint in one of London's most central postcodes. Nicholls' servicing and maintenance support will keep it performing well for years to come.
Efficient and effective.
