Overview

Nicholls were engaged to design and install a ground source heating and cooling system for a private residence in West Sussex, giving the homeowner a low-carbon alternative to fossil-fuel heating.

About the project

The homeowner now has a home heated and cooled entirely from the ground beneath it. Warmth is delivered evenly through the underfloor heating, and the same system provides cooling when the weather turns warm. Running costs are significantly lower than with fossil-fuel heating, and the home no longer depends on deliveries of oil or gas.

Nicholls drilled two closed-loop boreholes, each to 111 m, and connected them to an 8 kW heat pump. The loops sit entirely below ground, so the installation has minimal visual impact on the property and its surroundings. Because the ground stays at a steady temperature all year, the system performs consistently through every season and is designed for a long working life with very little maintenance.

A quiet, discreet and dependable system that will serve the home for decades, supported by Nicholls' ongoing servicing and maintenance to keep it performing at its best.

We are delighted with the outcome. Nicholls afforded a high level of customer service throughout the project, keeping us informed at all stages.
